French nuclear outages give Spanish CCGTs chance to profit

Nuclear outages in France have provided a long-awaited opportunity for Spanish utilities to ramp up their severely underutilised CCGTs, but the current market opportunity could disappear just as quickly as it arrived.

Roughly a third of France’s 63 GW of installed nuclear capacity – the main source of electricity in the country – has been offline since the beginning of the month due to planned winter maintenance, compounded by unexpected safety concerns that forced more plants offline.
