Brazil interview: Ieda Gomes, senior visiting fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies and FGV Energia

When the first LNG export cargo set sail from the US in April 2016, many were surprised to see it land in Brazil rather than Asia. Throughout 2016, South American demand provided new US LNG suppliers with respite amid an oversupplied global LNG market. But despite an increase in US imports, the regions’ overall LNG demand has declined, weighed down predominantly by weaker gas consumption in Brazil. Gas Matters spoke to Ieda Gomes, a leading South American energy expert with more than 30 years of experience, including executive positions at BP and Sao Paolo’s gas distributor Comgas, about the outlook for Brazilian demand and the wider region.
