Germany’s failed ‘energy transition’ re-ignites coal versus gas debate

High on the priority list of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s new “grand coalition” government is addressing the failures of Germany’s vaunted but failing energy transition – the Energiewende. Germany has done more than any other country in Europe to promote renewable energy. Yet the grand coalition treaty acknowledges that the 2020 target for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions will not be met. The Federation of German Industries (BDI) – which recently published the results of a detailed study into the nation’s energy and climate policies – warns that under current policies Germany will miss its 2050 emissions targets by a mile. Gas Matters looks at why the Energiewende is failing, the policy announcements of the new government, and what the BDI has recommended to get policy back on track.
