In October 2018, the last of the long-term contracts that underpinned the development of the Interconnector pipeline between the UK and Belgium expires. Twenty years after the pipeline’s inauguration, the appetite amongst European shippers for long-term bookings has waned and the regulatory demands have intensified. Interconnector must now tread a new path without the safe, predictable returns offered by a high concentration of multi-annual contracts.
