With booming domestic growth and hydroelectric power shortfalls pushing Brazil’s gas demand to all-time highs, LNG imports have become an uneconomical fix that led to a national gas bill of some $6.6 billion in visual_editor013. And with pipeline gas imports from Bolivia expected to hold steady until visual_editor030, monetising more domestic gas seems to be the long-term answer. To accomplish this, clear plans need to be in place to increase gas production and, more importantly, the proportion of gas allocated to the domestic market, where demand this year has outpaced flattening production by over 40 MMcm/d. Gas Strategies examines what steps Brazil is taking toward developing a domestic gas ‘escape route’.
