Since its discovery in 1959, the Netherlands’ giant Groningen onshore gas field has played a crucial role in meeting the country’s gas demand, helping to sustain the Dutch economy while acting as the go-to swing producer for the European market. But following a series of worsening seismic events linked to gas production, the government has been forced to cap output at 39.4 Bcm/year, and is under pressure to cut total production by over 40%. Gas Strategies examines the challenges faced by Groningen’s operator, NAM, and asks whether the field’s swing era is really over.
