After a decade of cost escalation during which energy price increases have helped gas liquefaction projects to remain economic, the new low oil price environment has brought cost reduction and competitiveness to the fore. A crucial question, therefore, is whether FLNG is made more or less attractive by lower oil prices than onshore liquefaction projects, given that several onshore projects have been postponed or cancelled because of the current adverse market conditions.
