Natural gas will continue to play a key role in the decarbonisation of Britain’s energy system “by providing flexible electricity generation and top-heating over the long-term”, according to systems operator National Grid.
But gas demand will fall by 2030 from the 2015 figure of 880 TWh (80 Bcm), National Grid said, with its forecasts ranging from 633 TWh (a fall of 28%) to 808 TWh (-8.2%).
