The gas industry is confident that it will benefit from the push to a low-carbon economy by superseding dirty coal-fired power generation and partnering with renewable energy. But this confidence overlooks the spectre of the unknown – the nascent technologies that have the potential to dramatically increase the cost-effectiveness of other generation methods and pull the rug out from under traditional thermal power.
"Disruptive technology" is not a new concept for the gas-to-power industry. Thermal power generation has been slowly ceding ground to new technologies for 20 years as wind, solar and other renewable technologies benefit from cost reductions, favourable regulation and subsidies.
