Competition from natural gas and new environmental regulations could close 20% of the US’ current coal-fired power fleet by 2020, US co-operative bank CoBank has predicted.
Market headwinds could see an additional 40 GW of coal capacity retired in the next five years, on top of the 20 GW already scheduled to go offline during that time, CoBank said in a recent report.
