Scotland will block all attempts to develop underground coal gasification (UGC) developments in the country, following the publication of a damning independent report into the technology, the Scottish government said late last week.
UGC, which produces synthetic gas from coal for use in gas-fired power plants, is highly polluting and poses a significant environmental risk, the government-commissioned report from the University of Glasgow said.
