Gas could squeeze out coal of European power markets if prices fell to around USD 5/MMBtu, Iberdrola VP for gas and carbon Jose Simon said at the European Autumn Gas Conference (EAGC) conference in the Hague on Tuesday.
Alternatively, a EU emissions trading system (ETS) certificate price of around EUR 13-15/tonne for CO2 emissions could also facilitate the shift, he said. That level is around 130-165% above current market prices, according to data from ICE.
