Drax Group, operator of the UK’s largest coal-fired power station, will build 1.2 GW of new open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) capacity in England and Wales to act as a back-up for renewable generation.
The four 299 MW units are expected to run no more than 500 hours per year. The first OCGTs are expected online by 2020 and will begin replacing capacity at the Drax coal-fired plant in northern England, half of which has already been converted to burn biomass.
