Gas-fired power was the big winner in the UK auction for back-up generation capacity in 2020-2021, with existing combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGTs) accounting for over 40% of the total 52.43 GW awarded. But the auction failed to attract substantial investment in new plants, as some had hoped.
Of the spare capacity deemed necessary to cover peak demand during the auction period, roughly 90% was covered by existing plants and interconnectors, along with 6% by “new-build” plants and 4% by refurbished plants and other sources, National Grid reported.
