Gas still appears to have a long-term role as a “bridge fuel” to a low-carbon global energy system, but competition is also mounting from renewables, batteries and to a lesser degree, biomethane.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicted in its latest World Energy Outlook that gas demand will continue rising sharply in the coming decades and overtake coal as the leading source of energy across the globe by 2040. However, in the medium-term, the IEA has predicted that power sector gas demand could begin to level off in the next five years largely due to renewables.
