As more and more countries look to import LNG, floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) are increasingly being used as the floating option offers potential importers the opportunity to commence receiving LNG at a lower upfront cost and with a shorter development time.
The FSRU industry has evolved considerably since proposals to use ships with on-board regasifiers to operate as an LNG import terminal first began to emerge in the early 2000s.
