Chinese regulators have fined over 600 coal-fired power plants for breaching emissions rules in a move that has reignited debate on how quickly gas can rise in the energy mix of Asia's powerhouse economy.
Increased smog has also forced local authorities in Zoucheng city, located on the central east coast between Beijing and Shanghai, to order some 30 companies operating coal-fired plants to reduce output or close permanently.
