The share of gas in the global power mix could decline to just 1% by 2040 as installed solar capacity increases, a study by an independent think tank Carbon Tracker and Grantham Institute finds.
The conclusions are in stark contrast with some leading industry forecasts, such as annual long-term outlooks by BP and the International Energy Agency (IEA). The most recent IEA forecast suggests gas will generate 16% of global power in 2040.
