Two European power markets with large fleets of CCGTs witnessed a surge in gas-fired generation in the first half of this year, but the relatively low price of coal and ongoing weakness in the EU carbon market means the trend is unlikely to last.
Spain and Italy, two countries with many gigawatts of installed gas-fired capacity, both experienced a swell in gas-to-power demand in H1’17, as drier weather cut heavily into output from hydroelectric dams.
