Two US utilities have pulled the plug on a USD 25 billion nuclear power project in South Carolina, after EPC contractor Westinghouse filed for bankruptcy. The decision leaves just one new nuclear project under construction in the country.
South Carolina Electric & Gas and the state-owned power company Santee Cooper had already spent USD 9 billion on the two-reactor project in Jenkinsville when they announced plans this week to cancel the 2.2 GW project, amid spiralling costs.
