The use of LNG as bunker fuel entered the spotlight when the International Maritime Organization (IMO) introduced stricter sulphur emission regulations for the shipping industry in North America and northern Europe two years ago, but according to Karen Sund, founder of Oslo-based Sund Energy, a lack of infrastructure, accessibility, price discovery and gruff contract negotiations pose considerable challenges for shipowners looking to go green. With a global sulphur cap of 0.50% expected to be put into place by the IMO in 2020, the obstacles hindering the use of LNG as a marine fuel can be overcome by creating a transparent market and negotiating “user-friendly” contracts, Sund tells LNG Business Review.
