Vote counting continues following Monday’s historic referendum in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), with early reports pointing to a strong vote for independence.
It may be some time before the full consequences become clear, but one thing is certain: a push for sovereignty by Irbil will only destabilise the already-beleaguered region of northern Iraq, relations with Baghdad and neighbouring Turkey and Iran – casting a further shadow over long-held aspirations of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to export gas into Europe via Turkey.
