The Netherlands newly formed four-party coalition government has announced plans to reduce production at the Groningen gas field by a further 1.5 Bcm by 2021, with the government also planning to reduce domestic gas demand by 3 Bcm over the same period.
The ruling VVD, the D66 and the two Christian parties – the CDA and the Christian Union – have agreed that a production cap is the best solution to reduce the possibility of further earthquakes linked to gas production at Groningen. The latest plan would see Groningen’s production reduced to 20.1 Bcm by 2021.
