The “hydrogen economy” – subject of much hype in the early 2000s - is undergoing a revival. EU leaders launched a new hydrogen energy initiative last year, the number of test projects is proliferating and hydrogen is now being touted as the next big investment opportunity in green tech. What is more, the future of the gas industry may be closely linked to that of hydrogen. Hydrogen could prolong the life of some pipeline and storage infrastructure in a decarbonising energy economy and play a key role in linking the gas and power sectors. With natural gas also in line as a potential feedstock for hydrogen production, Gas Matters asks whether hydrogen is the heir to natural gas’ legacy.
