Argentina has a new president: Javier Milei, a self-described “anarcho-capitalist” who appeared on the campaign trail with a chainsaw as he pledged to slash the state and privatise public companies. When it comes to energy, his administration faces an early test as it needs to decide whether to proceed with a key gas pipeline tender that was halted soon after Milei’s electoral win in October. Though keen to turn his country into a major oil and gas exporter, Milei’s ability to attract private investment to help address midstream bottlenecks will be a key factor on whether Argentina can achieve this ambition or require it to import more gas.
