It is an increasingly familiar dilemma: gas for export versus domestic use; higher returns abroad versus lower prices at home; drill, or conserve and protect? These are the choices, at least in their crudest form, facing all countries lucky enough to have abundant reserves of gas. In Australia, the ‘home or away’ row has been bubbling away for years, even before LNG production estimates reached the whopping 83 mtpa now predicted for 2017. Recent months, however have seen escalating tensions focused on starkly contrasting approaches by east coast neighbours Queensland and New South Wales.
