US LNG imports pick-up, but re-export options also offer good profit margins

Recent extreme winter weather conditions in the US pushed gas prices up to average $5.45/MMBtu for January as LNG imports reached 60 Bcf for the month – more than double compared to January 2009 levels. The US has been largely ignored by LNG sellers during the past twelve months with Europe a more profitable destination. But with US domestic gas prices still lower than in other global markets and gas stocks above normal levels for most of 2009, US terminal operators are now offering the option of re-exporting previously imported LNG.
