LNG supply and demand in the first half of 2010: The supply surge is well established

The LNG supply and demand data for the second quarter shows that the surge in LNG production is now well established, with global activity 9.8 mt (23.9%) higher than in the second quarter of 2009. For the first six months of 2010, LNG supply (measured in terms of LNG delivered to the market rather than LNG loaded at the liquefaction plants) was up by 20.9 mt (24.4%) compared with 12 months ago. As figure 1 shows, the monthly increase in production, which averaged over 3.5 mt in the first five months of the year, eased to just under 3 mt in June, but that was mainly the result of maintenance shut-downs, especially in Qatar (see below).
