Force Majeure

A contractual term used to define circumstances in which a party to a contract is not obliged to carry out its obligations because of major events outside its control. Force Majeure can mean very different things, depending upon the law under which the contract is written and the provisions of the clause, which can vary widely. Examples of force majeure could be war, extreme weather, industrial action.
