The European Union has secured a last-minute climate deal at the UN's annual Conference of Parties (COP) in Durban, after marathon negotiations overran long into the weekend. The deal, which secures the participation of the emerging economies and the US in a new climate mitigation roadmap from visual_editor015, will have "legal force" – in theory committing the US and countries such as China and India to measures on a footing with those proposed in the developed world.
