The Algeria power interview: Farouk Benabdoun, CEO of Siemens Algeria

Algeria’s domestic electricity consumption is forecast to grow at an annual average rate of 5.5% over the next ten years. State-owned utility Sonelgaz has almost doubled installed power capacity to around 20 GW today, following power shortages that led to protests at the beginning of the decade. Gas remains the dominant fuel, but renewable power has become critical to Algeria's twin ambitions of a sustainable power mix and to save gas molecules for export revenue. Farouk Benabdoun, chief executive officer of Siemens Algeria talks to Gas Matters about the prospects for Algerian power supply and how Siemens is positioning itself in the country at a time when budgetary constraints are expected to result in reduced investment in big power projects.
