The delivery of blue hydrogen production capacity is critically dependent on the availability of economically-viable, proven and safe carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. Yet, despite years of investment, there are just 26 operational CCS facilities across the world today. In the UK, arguably an ideal location for carbon storage, there are currently seven CCS facilities under development. Gas Matters speaks to Stuart Haszeldine, director of research group Scottish CCS and professor of CCS at the University of Edinburgh, who is working on the proposed Acorn CCS project off the coast of Scotland among other North Sea projects, about the technical difficulties facing the proposed hydrogen economy, and what it will take to make CCS a reality.
