At less than half the cost of a conventional regasification terminal and with lead times of around one year, investment in Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU) has surged over the last few years. FSRUs provide quick access to LNG supply, which can be important for security and diversity reasons, as well as flexibility to meet seasonal demand in some emerging gas markets. The flexibility comes from the mobility of FSRUs, which can be relocated at relatively short notice: some FSRUs are even currently operating in the charter market as LNG carriers. And being by definition offshore facility, FSRUs present fewer permitting and regulatory hurdles than conventional onshore terminals.
