Artur Yabe Milanez is the manager of the agri-food and biofuels department at the state-owned Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES), commonly known in English as the Brazilian Development Bank. He joined the bank in 2004 and has been assigned to its biofuels operations since 2008.

The BNDES is one of the world’s largest financiers of renewable energy, having allocated loans totalling BRL 35 billion (USD 6.4 billion) to the sector between 2004 and 2022.

In this interview with LNG Business Review, Milanez argues in favour of “fast and cheap” biofuels as a means of decarbonisation, responds to the criticism that biofuels produced from food crops can be a driver of deforestation, and discusses what he sees as “excessive criteria and limitations” placed on biofuels in the European market.
