One of the main objections cited by opponents of large-scale LNG exports from the US is environmental. They argue that by the time energy from liquefied shale gas reaches electricity consumers in Asia or Europe its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are comparable with – or worse than – the burning of coal. The US Department of Energy (DoE) set out its views on this matter in some detail, when it issued a final export licence approval in September for Cameron LNG.
