The gas industry in the Netherlands has taken a battering in recent years. Earthquakes caused by gas production, opposition to fracking, as well as falling demand and declining domestic reserves are just some of its woes. After having been a success story for over 50 years, since the discovery of the great Groningen field in 1959, the sector is now being forced to start thinking about a new energy age in which gas will have to play a radically different role.
