The gas industry is feeling the impact of the Russia-Ukraine crisis: tit-for-tat economic sanctions levied by the EU, US and Ukraine against Russia have spilled over into gas distribution and trade. In August, Ukraine adopted a bill allowing it to impose sanctions on Russia, including the halting of Gazprom-operated gas transit through its territory. It followed this with a second law intended to privatise the transmission and storage systems of state-owned Naftogaz, allowing EU and US companies to invest in and operate its pipelines. Gas Strategies analyses these recent developments, their possible impact on the construction of Russia’s South Stream pipeline and the wider implications for EU energy policy.
