US electricity producers face an uncertain future as politicians wrestle over climate policy. In one corner is President Barack Obama, anxious to leave a legacy of action on climate change, demonstrated more clearly than ever by the agreement on greenhouse gas emissions recently announced with China. His carbon pledge, based on radical new regulations for thermal power stations – working against coal and in favour of natural gas and zero-carbon wind and solar – would lead to deep cuts in carbon emissions. In the opposite corner are the newly rampant Republicans, who – having taken control of both houses of congress in the mid-term elections – have vowed to end Obama's ‘war on coal’. Gas Strategies commentates on what promises to be an epic fight.
