Tangled in red tape and political dispute, Israel’s once-promising offshore gas exploration programme has ground to a halt. The country has verified finds of 35 Tcf, located mainly in the Tamar and Leviathan gas fields. However their major stakeholders, US-based Noble Energy and Israel’s Delek Drilling, have been burned by a recent request from Israel’s anti-trust regulatory authority to break their perceived monopoly by relinquishing one of these fields. Gas Strategies examines the inconsistent and unpredictable regulatory environment in Israel, and speaks to observers close to the market.
