Activist investors have become a growing presence in the energy sector, with high-profile campaigns fought across the boards of several North American explorers, including Apache, Chesapeake and Hess. More recently, however, the phenomenon has spread to Europe and the international oil companies (IOCs). Gas Strategies looks at the drivers for shareholder activism in the energy industry and asks if activist investors really are short-termist ‘corporate raiders’, out to strip companies bare, or the white knights out to save the industry from itself.
