The German Energiewende (Energy transition) is perhaps the most ambitious plan for the transition to an almost carbon free energy system in Europe, and this explains why it is being closely observed far more widely than just in Germany. Such an all-embracing redesign of the German energy market has inevitably led to extensive criticism - positive and negative - and is causing much heartache to energy providers, not the least those dealing in natural gas. With elections due later this month we examine how much progress has been made and what may need to be done next.
