US interior secretary Ken Salazar has announced that environmental impact statements will now be required for all new deep-water drilling in US waters. Categorical exemptions, as granted to BP prior to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in April, will now be restricted to drilling projects that involve “limited environmental risk,” the secretary said in a statement on Monday.
