Natural gas is going to play a “vital role” in keeping Britain’s lights on over the next few decades as the country moves towards a low-carbon energy system, UK energy minister Charles Hendry said on Monday. Speaking in London at the launch of a major new study into gas future scenarios, he assured investors the government sees gas-fired power plants as a long-term solution to Britain’s energy challenges, “rather than an interim technology that we’ll expect people to turn off in a few years time.”
