The recent announcement by the US Geological Survey that it estimates that shale in Alaska contains 80 Tcf of recoverable natural gas, added further to the vast quantities of natural gas resources known in the state. In other parts of the world, such as east Africa, such resources would be attracting considerable attention for potential exploitation. Developing Alaska’s huge gas resource has, however, been a tortuous process to date. In this article LNG Business Review looks at why this has been so and considers whether the conditions are now more propitious for a decision to be made to develop the gas and take Alaska into LNG’s big league.
