Gazprom has picked Italy over Austria as the destination for its South Stream gas pipeline project, according to reports on Wednesday, after the EU blocked Gazprom from purchasing a 50% stake in the Central European Gas Hub (CEGH) trading platform in Austria. Originally, the South Stream route was to run under the Black Sea to southern and central Europe, branching through Austria, though a Gazprom source was quoted in the media as saying "only a spur will run to Austria".
