Russia’s Gazprom on Friday cut the volume of gas exports transiting Ukraine to Europe by 50%, emphasising the routing flexibility it now has by sending more gas via Belarus and the Nord Stream pipelines. The re-direction of volumes served as a reminder to Ukraine that it no longer holds such a large strategic position in controlling Russian exports. And Gazprom continues to progress development of another alternative transit route – South Stream.
