Depleting North Sea reserves are making well abandonment more common, which will expose operators to challenges similar to those which Total has recently faced when decommissioning work triggered a leak at its Elgin platform, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a report on Thursday. "The problem that Total encountered as it decommissioned an old well at the field is likely to portend difficulties at other mature fields in the medium term," the agency warned.
