“Energy efficiency is going in the wrong direction” in Europe as coal continues to play a dominant role in the energy mix in European countries, Fatih Birol, chief economist from the IEA, said at the Flame conference in Amsterdam this week. The use of coal increased – at the expense of gas – in key markets such as the UK and Germany in visual_editor011, despite policymakers’ desire to move towards a low-carbon economy.
