The US Department of Energy (DOE) said on Wednesday it had successfully completed tests of a new technology, which produced a steady flow of gas from methane hydrates on Alaska's North Slope. Field tests showed that by injecting a mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen into methane hydrate formations – structures that look like ice but have natural gas locked inside – the formation is melted and gas released. The DOE said the vast, entirely untapped resource holds enormous potential for US economic and energy security.
