Japan will be left without nuclear power for the first time since the first nuclear power-free day in 1970, when its last running nuclear reactor shuts down on Saturday due to routine maintenance, according to media reports. The move increases the likelihood of power shortages heading into the warm summer period. Amid fears surrounding safety, local communities demanded the shutdown of reactors after the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami, and resulting Fukushima crisis in March last year. It is unclear how long the shutdown will last, posing many unanswered question.
